Construction Whether you like them or not, raised panel lines present a challenge. If a model requires filling and sanding during construction, it is very likely that some raised panel lines will be sanded off in the process. It is not easy to restore these raised lines once they are gone. The cruel irony is that old kits are more likely to have raised panel lines, but they are also more likely to have fit problems. Even so, I wanted to build this P-40E as released, without re-scribing the panel lines.
The arbitrary fading and subtle wash does not draw undue attention to panel lines. The lower surfaces look even starker than the upper surfaces of the model. The bottom of the real aircraft was grey, but a pale blue-grey was chosen for the initial base colour. The application of the Burnt Sienna oil wash transforms the blue to an appropriately cool shade of grey. The clear parts are very thin and transparent, but the prominent locating tabs for the armoured glass behind the unframed windscreen presented a challenge.
Trumpeter supplies photo-etched buckles for the harness. The straps are made of paper. Some streaking with the airbrush combined with a selective oil wash brings the engine to life. A wash of Burnt Sienna oil paint has been generously brushed over the main components. Note that the exhaust stacks are still wet from this. The long crankcase was textured with a mixture of liquid glue and putty prior to painting. This is intended to represent rough cast metal. A silver pencil has been used to create subtle ‘chipping’ of the Interior Green paint.
