This variant carried a bomb-aiming crew member in the clear nose, and was intended to increase the bombing accuracy of the Me 262 dramatically. The Me 262 was still generally regarded as a novel experiment by senior Luftwaffe officers, even as the prototype was building up flying hours. Their attention was firmly fixed on the rough airstrips deep in the Soviet Union, where the long runways and constant maintenance required by a jet fighter would be a costly liability. In 1942 the Messerschmitt Bf109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw190 were more than capable of handling their opponents.
The cannon and the bay itself are also unpainted. Note the German factory stencilling on the rear bulkhead. The steel reinforcement strut is painted RLM 02 Grey. The top of this part has corroded where the paint has worn away. The grey electrical boxes with their printed circuit diagrams and the yellow cable bundles are in remarkably good condition. This Heinkel He 162A-2 is on display at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino California, around an hour east of Los Angeles. This is the BMW 003E-1 jet engine that was used to power the He 162.
Although his aircraft survives, Fröhlich himself remains widely known only as the pilot of one of the last surviving jets of World War II. KG 51: THE ‘CROP DAMAGE’ GESCHWADER The decision to produce the Messerschmitt Me 262 initially as a bomber, rather than as a pure fighter, and the role this decision played in the type’s introduction to service is well known and needs no further discussion here. Suffice it to say that the chronicler of Kampfgeschwader 51 proudly recorded that, as in the past, the ‘Edelweiss’ Geschwader had the honour of introducing yet another new type into combat.
