We present an approach to monitor user activity by utilizing commercially and readily available home automation technology.

Furthermore, various wireless solutions (EnOcean, Z-Wave), 20 M. Märker et al. Dali-controlled LED technology, binary contacts on drawers, beds, doors and windows and sensors for vital data acquisition and safety of the residents were installed in the prototype apartment. The collected data is used to detect inactivity and ADLs. In addition, LEDs and audio transducer indicate events and dangers for the resident via aural and visual signals. We partially installed redundant technology to verify the practicability and profitability of each solution.

Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014 KNX-Based Sensor Monitoring for User Activity Detection in AAL-environments 19 Living [2]. The building automation infrastructure designed in the context of this project represents the base for the A²LICE project. The involved practice partners pursue sustainable use of the existing technical building equipment (TBE) and aspire an expansion into other aspects of living. For example sensor data derived from home automation can be used for the detection of activities of daily living (ADL), which has been discussed in several publications [3,4,5,6].
