The second technique involved study of the ejecta. This was collected after each shot and placed in clean glass containers. The samples were subsequently cultured in a broth, which was spread onto petri dishes. After two days growth was visible on some of the dishes. The dishes containing the ejecta from the two rock shots are shown in Fig. 12. A clear difference in degree of bacteria content is visible. The shot where the projectile had no bacteria, has minimal bacteria growth on the relevant dish (This low level of bacteria growth was common to all shots where no bacteria were used, and indicates that the general handling techniques were sufficient to minimise the risk of contamination.
